    Dick J. Bierman.Axel Cleeremans - unknown
In this paper we explore the extent to which implicit learning is subtended by somatic markers, as evidenced by skin conductance measures. On each trial subjects were asked to decide which ‘word’ from a pair of ‘words’ was the ‘correct’ word. Unknown to subjects, each ‘word’ of a pair was constructed using a different set of rules (grammar ‘A’ and grammar ‘B’). A (monetary) reward was given if the subject choose the ‘word’ from grammar ‘A’. Choosing the grammar ‘B’ word (...)

    Dealing with the Experimenter Effect.Dick Bierman & Jacob J. Jolij - 2020 - Journal of Scientific Exploration 34 (4).
Methods in experimental science assume objective facts, and those effects are generally independent of the observer or experimenter. This objectivity assumption is not warranted in the field of human studies. Results of psychological experiments tend to be dependent on among other things the expectations of the experimenter. The experimenter effect togther with the replication crisis in social psychology are major issues in experimental parapsychology. We use Houtkooper's Hierarchical Observational Theory to look at a model for dealing with this issue, and (...)

"This volume deals with the question whether quantum mechanics can provide a picture of physical reality. The question is investigated from physical, philosophical, and logical perspectives on the basis of modern views on measurement and open quantum systems"--Back cover.

Most models of patient-physician communication take decision-making as a central concept. However, we found that often the treatment course of metastatic cancer patients is not easy to describe in straightforward terms used in decision-making models but is instead frequently more erratic. Our aim was to analyse these processes as trajectories. We used a longitudinal case study of 13 patients with metastatic colorectal and pancreatic cancer for whom palliative chemotherapy was a treatment option, and analysed 65 semi-structured interviews. We analysed three (...)

  17. Does consciousness collapse the wave-packet?Dick Bierman - 2003 - Mind and Matter 1 (1):45-57.
The 'subjective reduction' interpretation of measurement in quantum physics proposes that the collapse of the wave-packet, associated with measurement, is due to the consciousness of human observers. A refined conceptual replication of an earlier experiment, designed and carried out to test this interpretation in the 1970s, is reported. Two improvements are introduced. First, the delay between pre-observation and final observation of the same quantum event is increased from a few microseconds in the original experiment to one second in this replication. (...)

Comets and the Origin of Life by Janaki Wickramasinghe, Chandra Wickramasinghe, and William Napier.Steven J. Dick - 2012 - Journal of Scientific Exploration 26 (2).
This volume is the latest in a series of books and articles stretching back more than three decades on a theme quite startling in its claims and implications: that terrestrial life did not originate on Earth but arrived in the form of cells or bacteria from outer space. The idea of “panspermia,” that the seeds of life are spread from planet to planet, dates to the 19th century with the ideas of Lord Kelvin. It was championed by the Swedish physicist, (...)

Two Replication Studies of a Time-Reversed (Psi) Priming Task and the Role of Expectancy in Reaction Times.Marilyn Schlitz, Daryl Bem, David Marcusson-Clavertz, Etzel Cardena, Jennifer Lyke, Raman Grover, Susan Blackmore, Patrizio Tressoldi, Serena Roney-Dougal, Dick Bierman, Jacob Jolij, Eva Lobach, Glenn Hartelius, Thomas Rabeyron, William Bengston, Sky Nelson, Garret Moddel & Arnaud Delorme - 2021 - Journal of Scientific Exploration 35 (1):65-90.
Two experiments involving an international collaboration of experimenters sought to replicate and extend a previously published psi experiment on precognition by Daryl Bem that has been the focus of extensive research. The experiment reverses the usual cause–effect sequence of a standard psychology experiment using priming and reaction times. The preregistered confirmatory hypothesis is that response times to incongruent stimuli will be longer than response times to congruent stimuli even though the prime has not yet appeared when the participant records their (...)

Mind, machines and paranormal phenomena: a rejoinder to Beloffs radical dualist perspective.D. J. Bierman - 1996 - Journal of Consciousness Studies 3 (5-6):5-6.
In the very first issue of the Journal of Consciousness Studies, dualist John Beloff discusses the problem of how interactions may occur between the supposedly different realms of mind and matter. It is indeed the case that meta-analyses covering many years of research give very strong support to the reality of psi phenomena . Historical analysis has shown, however, that the results of some of the stronger paradigms are subject to a decline effect after an initial successful period of ten (...)

    Generic generalized Rosser fixed points.Dick H. J. Jongh & Franco Montagna - 1987 - Studia Logica 46 (2):193 - 203.
To the standard propositional modal system of provability logic constants are added to account for the arithmetical fixed points introduced by Bernardi-Montagna in [5]. With that interpretation in mind, a system LR of modal propositional logic is axiomatized, a modal completeness theorem is established for LR and, after that, a uniform arithmetical (Solovay-type) completeness theorem with respect to PA is obtained for LR.

Cambridge Geographical Text Books: Intermediate.A. J. Dicks - 2013 - Cambridge University Press.
First published in 1912, and originally intended as a textbook for students in secondary school, this book gives an overview of the human and physical geography of the occupied areas of the earth's surface. The text is richly illustrated with diagrams, tables, and contemporary photographs of places of interest. Although in general Dicks manages to rise above the colonial viewpoint prevalent at the time, certain aspects of the text are reflective of racial attitudes during this period of the twentieth century.
